Steve Hackett - 1981 November 7th - Le Club - Montreal

Notes by Rob Buran:

Steve Hackett, formerly of Genesis, was playing 2 shows at Le Club in Montreal, Canada. Steve was on CBS records, so I phoned them and ended up speaking with Mario Lefebvre of CBS Records Canada. He set up the interview upstairs above Le Club in a room with the paint peeling off the walls and ceiling. Again you can hear the sound of a ceiling fan groaning in the background, but there's less overall background noise compared to other interviews. Rick Clissold accompanied me as my engineer. It was just Steve, me, Rick and Mario. I went through a special procedure on the US side of the border Export Control so I could get back into the US without paying duty to bring my audio equipment back. This was the best interview because there was no interrogation or competition from people trying to ask a particular question first. This was no press-conference. It was just me, and I let him speak uninterrupted. It was also my best to date because I had a deep understanding of his work. When Steve first came into the room he reluctantly shook my hand, and he looked at me as if he were frightened (Richie was so right, he's really shy) but what you hear in Track 41 warmed him right up.

Track 41. Steve Hackett. November 7, 1981/Le Club, Montreal. While my Teac reel-to-reel was recording, I played for Steve the message Richie recorded for him (Track 40) on a cassette player so you could hear Steve's reaction. Steve warmed up immediately.

Track 42. Steve Hackett. November 7, 1981/Le Club, Montreal. Steve explaining how he got to know Richie while playing with Genesis and how he asked him about singing on his album Please Don't Touch.

Track 43. Steve Hackett. November 7, 1981/Le Club, Montreal. I ask Steve if he had any classical guitar training.

Track 44. Steve Hackett. November 7, 1981/Le Club, Montreal. The Melody Makerclassified ad that caught Peter Gabriel's attention and got him the gig with Genesis.

Track 45. Steve Hackett. November 7, 1981/Le Club, Montreal. Circumstances leading to leaving Genesis.

HACKETT SPEAKS!
