Asia - 1982 April 21st - Clarkson College - Potsdam, New York - WCKN-TV

 Notes by Rob Buran:

Asia was a band made up of superstars; Steve Howe formerly of Yes, Carl Palmer formerly of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, John Wetton formerly of King Crimson, and Geoff Downes formerly of The Buggies. They began their first world tour at Clarkson College in Potsdam, New York. I was working at WPTZ at the time in sales when someone came to my office to tell me there was someone on the phone looking for an experienced interviewer for a television interview of a rock band. Whoever took that call from WPTZ knew I had been involved with concerts at PSUC, and that I had done interviews. So I spoke with the Clarkson Concert chairman, he asked me, and I agreed. So a few weeks later I took Fred Little as my engineer up to Potsdam with me and my TEAC to record the audio fed from the studio audio board. It was set up Johnny Carson style, with me at screen right, with the band members screen center and left. We all had lavalier microphones. Fred did not have direct control over the audio because they had one of student engineers running the audio board. But Fred did a great job riding the levels to compensate for what was being fed into my TEAC from the audio board. I could not get WPLT IDs from them, although they were willing. Once the interview was done, a throng of fans flooded the set making recording IDs impossible with all the conversation going on, as Carl Palmer pointed out to me.

Track 46. Asia. April 21, 1982/WCKN-TV Clarkson College, Potsdam, New York. The difference between this interview and the others is that this is a television interview. I ask how they got together. Carl Palmer begins, then John Wetton, & Steve Howe.

Track 47. Asia. April 21, 1982/WCKN-TV Clarkson College, Potsdam, New York. I ask Steve Howe what happened to Yes, and Carl Palmer what happened to Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Track 48. Asia. April 21, 1982/WCKN-TV Clarkson College, Potsdam, New York. I ask if the newly released Asia album is selling because of the music or because of the superstar artists. Carl Palmer and John Wetton answer.

Track 49. Asia. April 21,1982/WCKN-TV Clarkson College, Potsdam, New York. I ask Steve Howe about being named Guitar Magazine's Top Rock (Overall) Guitarist five years in a row.
